Liposuction and Liposculpture
Goodbye Flabby Arms
Procedures That Will Lift Your Flabby Arms
By: Nathan Newman, M.D.

Flabby arms are perhaps one of the most unattractive parts of our body that make us self-conscious about our appearance.  In the following article I will discuss the procedures that will improve the shape of your arms and hopefully dispel a lot of the myths people are told about the procedures.

The arm is defined anatomically from the elbow to the axillae (armpit).  Factors that may cause flabby, fat and cellulitic, arms are weight gain, muscle loss, pregnancies, natural aging, and genetics.  People with much saggy skin on their arm are usually those who have lost much weight, smoke, are or were sun-lovers.  For the fatty arms removing the fat usually causes the skin to contract back and ‘shrink-wrap’ around the remaining tissues of the arms.  In those who have saggy skin the skin must be tightened to improve the appearance.

Liposuction and Liposculpture
Excess fat can be removed through liposuction and the arm muscles defined through liposculpturing.  If done properly on the right candidate the results are great and there is virtually no scar.  The skin will be smooth and tight.  There is minimal down time and little discomfort.  Most of my patients prefer to do the procedure under local anesthesia and afterwards don’t even need to take Tylenol for discomfort.

Axillary Tuck

When there is some loose skin that remains after liposuction, a small arm tuck is done through a small incision in the armpit.  The scar is well hidden, there is minimal down time and it can be done under local anesthesia.

Arm Lifts (Brachioplasty)
For those who have a lot of loose skin, then the next step is a traditional arm-lift.  The excess skin is removed by making an incision along the length of the arm.  The scar is long, may be visible, and the procedure is more involved.  In post-bariatric surgery patients, where there is a lot of loose skin the benefits usually out-weigh the risks.

For patients who have undergone surgery but still have some uneveness or lumpiness in their arms, a series of injections of mesotherapy solution into the lumps can smooth and improve the appearance of the arms.

Some patients have some loose wrinkly skin on their arms that can be treated with the Titan machine.  The Titan machine uses infrared light to tighten the skin without the need of injections, numbing ceams or downtime.

For patients with cellulite looking skin on their arms, one can see improvement and smoothing of the skin with Dermosonic therapy. The Dermosonic machine combines the suctioning of Endermologie with ultrasound to improve and tone the appearance of the skin.

If you are thinking about improving the appearance of your arms, be sure to have a face-to-ace consultation with your cosmetic surgeon to see which procedures will give you the most results with the least risk.
